How are we living and coping in the era of COVID-19? A small invisible virus is driving the world in different directions than before. This pandemic and the resulting lockdown measures have led to the disruption of education and closure of institutions and firms. Under these circumstances, where no one can predict or guarantee the days ahead, we may experience feelings of anxiety, depression and helplessness.

John, a former swimming instructor, lost his job when the community centre closed in March due to the shutdown. At first, he expected to get back to work within a month, but it has now been more than six months and, as John says, “I don’t see any hope”. He said that he is suffering from anxiety, depression and severe insomnia, while experiencing financial difficulties and conflict with family members.

The COVID-19 pandemic is leaving millions of people without jobs. Unexpected job loss can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. You may experience grief in the same way as the death of someone you love. You may not only feel the loss of a job but also feel the loss of career achievement, the relationship with co-workers, sense of purpose, identity, and a sense of belonging. The pandemic also has brought about a new normal life andpeople feel the loss of their former normal life. Under these circumstances, how do we cope well with the changes?

Take care of yourself

Before COVID-19 started, if you were experiencing less time to take care of yourself due to your busy lives, make an effort now to build up strategies to take care of your physical and emotional health. While you cannot control what happens to you, you can control how you respond to it.

Build up resilience

Resilience can help you get through and overcome hardship in this situation. Resilience is the process of adapting in the face of adversity, difficulties, and other significant sources of stress. Being resilient is learning from past experiences and developing new coping strategies moving forward.

Focus on the present moment

Try to bring your thoughts back to the present instead of dwelling on the past. Realize that you cannot control this situation. Focus on what you can do to control your life right now, rather than being concerned about your future. However, you can control how to cope with these challenges. Remember that being resilient can help you focus on what you can do now and keep moving one step forward, which may lead you to new opportunities.
