My Personal Tips for Preventing Dementia

At 77 years old, I lead an active and vibrant life, much like that of a younger person. This lifestyle is supported by a balanced approach to physical and mental well-being. To maintain my physical health, I follow a structured eating routine. I begin each day with a well-balanced breakfast that includes both proteins and vegetables, and I make sure to have a nutritious lunch and dinner daily. Physical activity is also a crucial part of my life. I cultivate a garden in the Korean community center’s backyard, walking around 8,000 steps each day. Twice a week, I play table tennis for three hours at the

center, and at home, I swim for 45 minutes, use the treadmill for 20 minutes, and do stretching exercises for another 20 minutes. Equally important to me is preserving my mental sharpness. I practice daily intellectual exercises, such as translating Korean books into English. This bilingual translation work engages my problem-solving skills and requires me to re-interpret expressions in two languages, which strengthens my focus and linguistic abilities. Translating books on diverse topics stimulates various regions of the brain, enhancing memory, language, and logical thinking. In particular, translating meditation books provides cognitive stimulation and a meditative experience that reduces stress and promotes emotional stability, which is beneficial for preventing degenerative diseases. Currently, I am translating Live with NQ (Network Quotient) and have discovered the importance of NQ, a concept that encourages active social engagement. I hope that by continuing my steady practice of physical, mental, social and spiritual activities, I can maintain a fulfilling and healthy life up to 100 years old.
