Reflections on Megalopolis
Megaloopolis is an ambitious film by Francis Ford Coppola, blending modern and ancient Rome into a unique work. Coppola aimed to create an innovative film by using techniques like splitting the screen and blurring perspectives and boundaries. The film emphasizes visual and editing aesthetics, transforming New York into the New Roman Empire.
The story centers around three characters: Caesar (an architect and revolutionary), Franklin Cicero (the mayor of New York), and Crassus III (the emperor of the New Roman Empire). Caesar pushes for a redevelopment project to create a utopia, but it leads to widespread poverty. Cicero opposes him and becomes his rival. The story deepens when Cicero's daughter, Julia, falls in love with Caesar.
The film reflects both the fall of ancient Rome and the modern dream of utopia, with Caesar seemingly achieving power and dreaming of a new utopia with Cicero and Crassus. However, in light of historical events, Caesar is ultimately assassinated by a rebellion, and both Cicero and Crassus meet tragic ends. This suggests that the film does not end with a happy conclusion.
Megaloopolis explores the American dream and desires, questioning whether dreams can truly be realized. The film’s core message is the horror of dreams being crushed, and the attempt to trample them again. While the film dreams of a better future, it denies that dream, foreshadowing the tragic future humanity may face.
